Health and Fitness

The UWA Exercise and Performance Centre (EPC) is the home to an integrated exercise facility that aims to improve clients physical functioning, fitness and health-related quality of life through exercise.

The multidisciplinary team at EPC specialises in the assessment, promotion and improvement of the health and fitness of clients including the general public through to recreational and elite athlete. Using evidence-based and client-centred approaches, the team at EPC aims to improve client's health and fitness through individualised programs.

Facilities include a fully equipped gym including aerobic and resistance equipment, Powerplate, TRX suspension training and clinical Pilates apparatus.

Health and fitness services available at EPC include:

  • comprehensive health assessments
  • general health screening
  • musculoskeletal assessment
  • aerobic fitness assessment
  • fitness and exercise programs

Specialised Exercise Management Programs

Medi-Swim - Aquatic exercise targeted to address metabolic disease &/or its risk factors

10-week aquatic exercise program incorporating strength, mobility and swimming components run by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) and Swimming Instructor at The University of Western Australia.

Comprehensive outcome assessments are conducted pre, during and post program to ensure participants are achieving individual goals with regards to metabolic disease prevention and/or management. 

  • Private health or Medicare rebates may apply.  

Why?

  • Exercise interventions delivered by an AEP are effective for the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes including improved insulin sensitivity and glucose management, and reductions in weight, blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglycerides and heart disease risk.

Healthy Hearts - Cardiac Exercise Rehabilitation Program

Specialised 6 week cardiac rehabilitation programs delivered by Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP) including 2 gym-based training sessions per week and comprehensive health and functional assessments pre- and post-program.

Healthy Hearts offer a 2-tiered program based on level of supervision and assistance required and previous cardiac exercise rehabilitation completed, with ongoing exercise options and recommendations included.

Why?

Cardiac rehabilitation programs designed and facilitated by AEPs are highly successful in:

  • Changing physical activity behaviours
  • Preventing of delaying subsequent cardiac arrest
  • Improving activity tolerance, muscle atrophy and circulation
  • Improving quality of life; and
  • Significantly reducing risk factors for associated medical conditions

When:

Individual initial assessments are required before commencing Healthy Hearts and appointments are subject to availability Mon - Sat from 6am - 6.30pm.  

Comprehensive assessment may include cardiovascular capacity and fitness, body composition, health behaviours, quality of life, lung function, physical function, strength and more!  

  • Program A (entry program): Tues 2pm, Wed 11am, Thurs 2pm &/or Fri 11am

  • Program B (ongoing program): Mon 11am, Tues 3pm &/or Thurs 3pm

*Alternative supervised exercise options are available if program times are not suitable
