Sleep disorders are increasingly recognised as a worldwide public health concern. This has lead to a rapid growth in the number of clinical sleep laboratories. As a result there is a tremendous shortage of people qualified to work in these laboratories. This shortage will continue as new sleep labs open every year.
The Graduate Diploma in Sleep Science is intended as a University-level training program for anyone with a background in science or allied health wishing to gain advanced training in adult or paediatric sleep technology (sleep science)
These include an advanced theoretical understanding of scoring and interpretation of diagnostic and other sleep studies, practical aspects of advanced polysomnography including sleep monitoring for a range of sleep pathologies, advanced practical skills in sleep scoring and application of therapies for sleep disorders for both adults and children, as well as skills in laboratory management.
The course has been designed to suit both international and local students who require the option of undertaking intensive training to minimise concurrent living costs while undertaking continued education.
Units in the first half of the course are identical to UWAs Graduate Certificate in Adult Sleep Science or Paediatric Sleep Science, as below
The second half of the course comprises two online units able to be completed by anyone with internet access, and two intensive laboratory-based units which requires students to reside in Perth for a period of two weeks whilst attending practical classes in the new purpose-built sleep facility on the UWA campus.
The University has recently built a 480 m2 sleep teaching facility on its main campus. This 5-bed facility contains a range of state-of-the art sleep-monitoring equipment. The facility is close to the School of Anatomy and Human Biology, where additional teaching and computing laboratories are located.
The clinical partners for the Graduate Diploma in Sleep Science are the West Australian Sleep Disorders Research Institute and the Sleep Laboratory at the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children - Respiratory Department.
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject area from a recognised university; or two years' full-time (or equivalent) professional work experience in sleep science; and certification of national police clearance.
All applicants for UWA coursework programs must demonstrate a minimum level of English Language Competence.
