Postgraduate degrees by research, such as PhDs and Master's by Research, are comprised of an extensive, independent research project or thesis which the student conducts in close consultation with an academic supervisor.
A postgraduate research degree allows students to fully explore a chosen area of interest, expanding their knowledge of the field, and equipping them with highly-transferable research skills that open up a range of opportunities after graduating.
The Faculty offers many benefits to postgraduate researchers. Depending on the school you enrol in, these may include:
The Master of Philosophy is a program of independent, supervised research that can be taken in any discipline for which appropriate supervision is available and is assessed solely on the basis of a thesis. It is a highly flexible course that mirrors the structure and breadth of the Doctor of Philosophy.
A PhD is a program of independent, supervised research assessed solely on the basis of a thesis that is examined externally. A doctoral thesis must be a substantial and original contribution to knowledge of the subject with which it deals, and usually takes three to four years to complete.
You can undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in any area of science. Find out more about the research currently being conducted in the Faculty of Science by visiting the Research section of our website.
Domestic and international students may apply for a limited number of prestigious postgraduate research scholarships, offered by the Faculty of Science. Applications are now open for 2017
The Faculty of Science also has higher doctorates which are awarded for independent and original research:
Before you can apply to do a Master's by Research or a PhD, you must find a supervisor.
Domestic students can contact the Graduate Research Coordinator in the School or Centre in which you wish to undertake research.
Domestic and international students can also browse a selection of current research projects across the Faculty in our PhD opportunities pages.
These pages provide project outlines, scholarship information, and eligibility requirements, and enable you to contact potential supervisors directly.
