I had a slightly chequered beginning at UWA - in fact the only subject I passed in first year was Geology.

After a few years doing the Europe thing I came back and got stuck into it. The time it took to earn the degree often seemed interminable, and even annoying at times, but I never regretted it.

After four years I was discharged with Honours, and went straight into a job 1,000 kilometres from Perth, as a geologist on a gold mine. In the five years since leaving UWA I've spent just over half the time in a head office role in Perth, working on the economic side of the industry. Now I've gone into business with some partners setting up, funding and running a junior exploration company.

I have had to concentrate in order to avoid the cliches that adorn this sort of write up, but if the outdoors is your scene, you like science and technical applications which are not too precise, and enjoy a beer, you could do worse than the Earth Sciences.
