ICARDA - Genetic Resource Section
I saw that the work I was doing in food security had the potential to have a very positive impact on humanity at large.
I started out by doing agricultural science to apply it to the very practical aim of farming in a sustainable way, but these aspirations changed when I started to work in the international community.
I now manage Australian and internationally funded genetic resource conservation projects in the Central and West Asian and North African region, research more efficient ways to utilize genetic resources, curate the food legume collection and undertake seed collection missions.
While the job is very demanding it gives me exposure to key players in the plant genetic resource community and has allowed me to see many interesting countries and meet a whole range of even more interesting people.
UWA taught me the ability to organise and discipline my thinking to apply it to specific problems, statistics and the ability to write clearly.
Studying science is richly rewarding in terms of what you learn, the type of people who are working in science and the fact that you will be a part of a family of scientists working for the betterment of mankind.
Seed Hunter, featuring Ken Street, is a highly entertaining one-hour documentary about a topic that is vital for the future of planet – finding seeds that may help save the world from its greatest ever crisis - a global food shortage brought about by human-induced climate change.
