  • Shayne Loft, Troy Visser, Jason Bell: DST grant from the Research Network for Undersea Decision Superiority Program on “Measuring and Augmenting Mental and Team Performance in Future Submarine Control Rooms”.
  • Shayne Loft, Stephanie Chen, Troy Visser, Jason Bell, and Gavin Pinniger (from Human Sciences): DST grant “Human Performance in a Maritime Command Team: Toward a Methodology to Assess the Impacts of Anticipated Information Integration and Technology Change”.
  • Ben Grafton: ARC Discovery Early Career Research Award (DECRA) to investigate the cognitive basis of anxiety-linked heightened negative expectancies
  • Ullrich Ecker and Shayne Loft secured ARC Future Fellowships. Ulli’s project will be on “Combating Misinformation – Designing a Toolkit to Address a Global Problem”. Shayne’s project will be on “Adapting Automation Transparency to Allow Accurate Use by Humans”.
  • Vanessa Bowden & Shayne Loft: Part of a team that has secured a Neurotrauma Research Program Grant titled “Improving the executive decision-making process using non-invasive brain stimulation in older adults: A step towards reducing traffic accidents”, administered by Murdoch University.
  • Casey Lister and Nic Fay: UWA Research Collaboration Award entitled “The origins of language: A study of Indigenous sign languages and language creation among Australian Aboriginal Peoples”.
  • Laura Dondzilo and Julie Ji: Cockell Research Awards for mental illness research. Laura will collaborate with the University of Muenster in Germany on the project “Efficacy of a novel self-appraisal induction in Body Dysmorphic Disorder”. Julie will collaborate with Uppsala University in Sweden on the project “Investigating ‘flashforward’ mental imagery of self-injury as a proximal risk barometer and modifiable treatment target’.
  • Jeneva Ohan: Two Rotary grants: “Engaging Parents in Online Interventions for their Child’s Behaviour Problems by Using Action Planning” and “Mindful Self-Compassion for LGBTQ youth: A multi-site randomized controlled trial” (led by Ashleigh Lin).
  • Liz Pritchard was appointed to the Psychology Board for Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory.
  • School affiliates Jo Badcock and Georgie Paulik-White have published a new textbook, “A Clinical Introduction to Psychosis” that is aimed toward trainee clinical psychologists and clinical neuropsychologists.
  • Professor Stephen Lewandowsky: Humboldt Research Award to carry out research in cooperation the Max-Planck Institute in Berlin.
  • Guy Curtis: TEQSA Academic Integrity Award, in collaboration with a team from UniSA, QUT, and International College of Management.
  • Former staff member Kim Kirsner: UWA Academic Staff Association's Philippa Maddern Award.
  • Lies Notebaert: First prize in UWA Rising Stars three-minute thesis competition for her presentation “The importance of being flexible; Resilience in a changing world”
  • Ari Antonofsky & Shayne Loft: Research Grant “HMAS Choules – Human Factors in Maintenance Dependability” from the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group in the Department of Defense.
  • Andrew Page: Part of a team awarded a grant under the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources’ Rural Research and Development for Profit program for “Closing the Loop, Black Soldier Fly technology to convert agricultural waste into high quality fertiliser and soil improvers”.
  • Jeneva Ohan: 2018 Brightwater Care Group Award for her project “Acquired Brain Injury and Early Onset Dementia”.
  • Nicolas Fay: part of a team that obtained a Defence Science and Technology Group Award for a project “Understanding information and trust: From the individual to the population”, hosted at the University of Melbourne.
  • Troy Visser and David Badcock: DSTG Award for a project entitled “Colour digital displays and night vision search performance”.
  • Vanessa Bowden, Shayne Loft, Jason Bell, and Troy Visser: Faculty of Science infrastructure funding for a Detection Response Task System.

  • Danielle Fynn: Runner-up in the UWA 3-minute-thesis competition.
  • Alex Berry: Australian Psychological Society’s Prize in Psychology (highest honours mark) and the H.L. Fowler Prize in Psychology (best honours thesis).
  • Simone Harrington: Finalist for the Aboriginal STEM Student of the Year Award at the 2019 WA Premier's Science Awards!
  • Anna Jorgensen: UWA Professional Staff Award for Service and Support for her tireless work with the Specialist Mentoring Program.
  • Kim Eaton: Winner of the 2018 APS College of Clinical Psychologists Student Prize.
  • Anu Bharadwaj: Best Scientific Poster Award at the European Association for Work & Organizational Psychology Conference 2019 in Italy.
  • Michael Wilson: 2018 Early Career Award from the Society for Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Science, and a UWA GRS publication prize (best in Social Science Quantitative), for his journal article “Remembering to Execute Deferred Tasks in Simulated Air Traffic Control: The Impact of Interruptions”, published in Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied.
  • Bree Mitchelson: Dr Peter Livesey PhD award for her research project “Role of attention control and neuro-endocrine stress response in vulnerability and resilience to chronic and traumatic stress”.
  • Priyanjali Mithal: WA Government Science Industry PhD Fellowship.
  • Savannah Moscarda: UWA Student Guild Students’ Choice Teaching Award.

2018 staff awards

  • Jeneva Ohan: UWA Faculty of Science Award for Excellence in External Engagement, for her efforts to close the Indigenous training gap in psychology, and the development of a professional development resource for psychology high-school teachers in WA.
  • Carmela Pestell: Neurotrauma Research Program grant for the project “A validation study to predict poor outcomes following mild traumatic brain injury” (with Fitzgerald et al.).
  • Shayne Loft, Simon Farrell, Troy Visser: Defence Science and Technology Group of the Department of Defence (Navy) grant, “Predicting change in operator perceptions of automation reliability and the misuse and disuse of automated recommendations over time”.
  • The ParkC research group (A/Prof Andrea Loftus (Director), Prof Natalie Gasson, Prof Romola Bucks [UWA], Dr Meghan Thomas [Dept of Health]; and Emily Corti [RA]) received an Acknowledgement of Contribution for their ongoing collaboration with the Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist Service in their research endeavours.
  • Diana Tan: BrightSpark Research Collaboration Award from the Raine Foundation to work with Sasha Baron-Cohen’s group at Cambridge University on the project "Investigating biological markers of autism using longitudinal cohort studies in the UK and Australia".
  • Carmela Pestell: Nominee in the prestigious Community TAB Community Service Award.
  • Ben Grafton: Awarded an Alumni Fund Grant for the project titled “The UWA PhD Student Resilience Pilot Project”.
  • Pat Dunlop: UWA Student Guild’s Students’ Choice Teaching Award.
  • Jason Bell and Ullrich Ecker: Featured in UWA Student Guild’s Best Unit Guide.
  • Romola Bucks and Johanna Badcock: Elected Fellows of the Association for Psychological Science—The Association for Psychological Science elected a total of 102 Fellows from across the globe, in this round, on the basis of their “sustained outstanding contributions to the science of psychology in the areas of research, teaching, service, and/or application”. Four of the 102 Fellowships were awarded to academics working in Australia, and half of those went to UWA psychologists.
  • Alice Mason and Patrick Dunlop: Selected as members of the Australian Academy of Science EMCR Forum’s Representative Network for the Australian Brain Alliance.
  • Yong Foo: 2018 ARC CCD Postdoctoral Exchange Award to visit David Perrett at University of St Andrews, UK.
  • Clare Sutherland: ARC CCD Postdoctoral Exchange Award to visit Jeremy Wilmer in Wellesley College, USA.
  • David Badcock: Selected as a member of the Science Advisory Board for the Sarich Neuroscience Institute.
  • Julie Ji: Recipient of a prestigious Forrest Fellowship.
  • Pat Dunlop and Djurre Holtrop: DFES grant titled “Recruiting for the future: Best practice recruitment for Emergency Service volunteers.
  • Nic Fay: Defence Science and Technology Group grant to work with A/Prof Amy Perfors, Melbourne University.
  • Shayne Loft and Jason Bell: Defence Science and Technology Group grant investigating automation transparency effects on UXV command and control.
  • David Badcock: Defence Innovation Partnership grant from the Australian Department of Defence, led by Anna Ma-Wyatt at the University of Adelaide, “Realising the benefit of augmented reality devices in military applications”.

2018 Student and alumni awards

  • Savannah Moscarda: UWA Student Guild’s Students’ Choice Teaching Award.
  • Jemma Collova: won a competitive APR internship with the Australian Department of Innovation, Industry and Science, in the Innovative Metrics division. She will be working for 4-5 months in Canberra on a project looking at how best to measure and promote successful positive innovation, as well as building new links between academia and government. During this time, Clare Sutherland will be her academic mentor.
  • Kate Derry and Matthew Robson: UWA Student Guild’s Students’ Choice Teaching Award.
  • Doug MacFarlane: Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship to undertake an 18-month research program at the University of Cambridge.
  • Yong Foo: Endeavour Postgrad Fellowship to visit Shinichi Nakagawa at UNSW for 6 months.
  • Laura McLaughlin Engfors: ARC CCD Student Exchange Award to visit Wellesley College, USA.
  • Ee Pin Chang: Best Student Poster Prize at the Australasian Experimental Psychology Conference in Hobart.
  • Shenooka Nanthakumar: 2017 Student Prize for the APS College of Clinical Psychologists (CCP), which includes an invitation to present a poster of her research at the 2019 APS College of Clinical Psychologists National Conference.
  • Robert Green, Khan Collins, Kris Singh: Award of honourable mention on the Dean’s List for outstanding postgraduate theses (awarded to less than 5% of PhD theses).

2017 staff awards
