Why should I study at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China?

Adapting to the local life overseas is a valuable life experience. Zhejiang University, located in Hangzhou, is one of the leading institutions in China. You will be able to experience science first hand, at another world-class university, as well as gaining an international perspective.

How can I apply?

Enrol for the second semester unit. Code is SCIE2210.

When and what?

During semester two at UWA, and from 27 November to 20 December 2008 in China.

At UWA the students will prepare for their experience while at Zhejiang University students will complete a small research project, in a field related to their studies at UWA.

The unit is aimed at students who are completing or have completed level 2 units, with the generic skills to undertake a laboratory experience at an overseas institution and the ability to self-manage during their stay.

UWA students will add to the scientific knowledge and the English language skills of the Zhejiang students with whom they interact. The students will also engage in a range of scientific based social and cultural excursions. 

  • At UWA - lectures (16 hours), language and cultural seminars (four hours)
  • At Zhejiang, China - four weeks of practical experience (48 hours) and scientific excursions (eight hours).

How will I benefit?

You will:

  • expand your knowledge of a particular scientific topic related to your major area of study, from an international perspective
  • undertake a small research project at a different university involving different processes and academic culture
  • enhance your future employment prospects by developing a greater understanding of science in an international environment
  • broaden your generic skills: research process and strategies, reflective process, data gathering techniques, independent learning, presentation and communication. 

What are the costs, and is financial help available?

You need to pay the usual HECS fees for this unit. You will also be expected to pay your own travel and accommodation. The estimated traveling and living expenses in China is about AU$3000.
